Remarkable. I luckily missed the end of today's game and I'm apparently very lucky I did. The headline by the Cubs beat writer for MLB.com, Carrie Muskat: Cubs snatch defeat from jaws of victory in ninth. So true. LaTroy Hawkins' throwing error in the top of the 9th inning allowed the game-tying and go-ahead runs to score, basically handing the game to the Phillies. "Here you go! We're not worthy of wins." Shockingly, only 4 of the 6 losses have been credited to the Cubs' bullpen. Bartosh got the loss April 30 when the Cubs lost 5-7. Prior & Zambrano got losses on Sunday and Tuesday. Novoa got the loss Wednesday, then Hawkins got the losses both yesterday and today. The starters (Zambrano, Wood, Prior, Maddux and Dempster) are a combined 8-7 with a 4.60 ERA. The lowly bullpen is 4-9 with a 4.34 ERA. The higher ERA from the starters is surprising, but the records sure aren't. That reflects just as much on the Cubs' inability to come back in games as it does the AAA-quality of the bullpen. Bastards. For those curious, here's how all the Cubs games have gone up 'til now. Each logo represents a game and the logo shown was the victor of that game: 6 in a row. I need to go throw up. Hey, maybe I can throw up Cubs Style and miraculously miss everything from 4 inches away from the victory of hitting the toilet. |
