Looks pretty lost, doesn't he? For those Drumline folks reading this, look at those stick heights! Awful. From the Omaha World-Herald October 16, 2004 LINCOLN (AP) - Tommy Lee has played plenty of stadium shows with Motley Crue. But none like the show he played Saturday when he joined the University of Nebraska marching band for its halftime performance before 77,881 red-clad football fans."Oh yeah, it's real different," Lee said. "That was awesome, absolutely great." Lee is in Lincoln filming an NBC-TV reality show for which he is taking classes at Nebraska, including chemistry and the history of rock 'n' roll. He tried out for the drumline earlier in the week and joined the band at Memorial Stadium for the Baylor-Nebraska game. Lee didn't march into the stadium with the band before the game. But the 42-year-old joined them in the stands in full uniform, bobbing his head and playing along with the other drummers, a broad smile on his face. Late in the first quarter he came out of the stands to fire "Der Viener Schlinger," a hand-held compressed air cannon that shoots hot dogs high in the air into the stands. "It's awesome, dude," Lee exclaimed after his first shot. "You can launch a wiener." Lee enjoyed launching the wiener so much he came down for another turn between quarters, holding up three fingers to indicate the number of hot dogs he was going to shoot, and then blasting them into the stadium's upper deck. He took part in the band's Latin music halftime show, playing a rack of five tom-toms that were carried over his shoulders. A cheer went up from the stands when Lee was shown on the stadium's giant TV screens during a rendition of Stan Kenton's arrangement of the melodic Cuban song "Malaguena." When the halftime show ended, Lee and the rest of the drummers gathered on the northwest corner of the field, marching diagonally across the field to the stands. Lee stayed in perfect formation and on the regimented beat, then slapped hands and took pictures with the other drummers when the formation reached the sideline. Lee apparently took his Saturday performance seriously, practicing for a couple hours a night with other members of the drumline to perfect his playing and marching. If the reality show makes the cut, it is scheduled to air on NBC in July. |
