Well, the Cubs finally squeaked past the Giants and all it took was a 7-2 start to a 12-game, 11-day, 4-city, longest-of-the-year road trip with a sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. No sweat! Today is the first time the Cubs have led the Wild Card standings since September 7. Seemingly every day since then has been spent one measly half game behind the Giants, but that's only been the case since the 13th. The remaining schedule for the Cubs has the last road games of the year starting today against the Mets, then back to Wrigley for 4 games with the Reds at 3 with the Braves. For the Giants, there are 6 games remaining with NL West-leading and archrival Los Angeles Dodgers (3 in SF, 3 in LA) and 3 games against the Padres in San Diego. Ouch. Houston, who shouldn't be forgotten, doesn't have it much easier. They have 3 in Milwaukee then host the Cardinals and Rockies each with 3-game series'. Yet again, ouch. Things are looking up for the Cubs, which is exactly why I'm worried. Boy, I sound like I'm from Boston. |
