I found myself watching the dedication of the WWII Memorial today. It is a beautiful site:To the best of my knowledge, I do not have any relatives that were involved in WWII. My mother's step-father was involved in Vietnam, I think. I know my father-in-law is a Vietnam veteran; his father was in WWII, I believe. All in all, I have never heard stories from those involved. A few different speakers at the dedication today said that World War II has had a profound affect on every day life. I came to an interesting realization shortly after that statement was mentioned. I would not be living in this apartment building if it weren't for WWII. Eisenhower, from what I remember from some History Channel show, witnessed the German Autobahn first-hand and wanted that back home. So began the Eisenhower Interstate System. I-80, a very large member of said system, runs very near my apartment building, which, if it weren't for I-80, probably never would have been built. Interesting. |
