Submitted by Brent Butler After yesterday's great college football games for Iowa universities, I've searched the web and stole all kinds of interesting stuff. If you didn't already know, here's how Iowa's four largest universities did yesterday: - Drake beat Quincy 45-28 - Northern Iowa beat Cal Poly 26-22 (in 2nd OT) - Iowa beat 12th-ranked Penn State 42-35 (in OT) - 19th-ranked Iowa State beat 20th-ranked Nebraska 36-14 Here's some interesting information on the Iowa / Penn State and ISU / Nebraska games (from ESPN.com, HawkeyeFootball.com and Cyclones.com): - The Hawks played in front of a crowd of 108,000 - Iowa is only the third school to defeat Joe Paterno-coached teams at least three years in a row; the other two are Alabama ('87-'89) and Michigan ('97-'01) - Saturday's game made for Nebraska's first consecutive losses in regular season games since 1976 - Depending on the rankings that come out later today, this could be the first time since 1981 that Nebraska won't be a Top 25 team - Saturday was ISU's first win against a Top 25 team since 1993 - The 22-point margin was ISU's greatest margin of victory over Nebraska since 1899 - Saturday's attendance was a new record for Jack Trice Stadium (51,888) ----- WHO-TV 13's Sunday night call-in show, "Sports Sound Off with Keith Murphy," features a segment called "What's Buggin' Andy?" in which TV-13 sports reporter Andy Fales talks about -- you guessed it -- what's bugging him. This is what he had to say last week (from WHOtv.com): As much as I like the Iowa State Cyclones, I'm not sure I want them to win this weekend as much as I want Nebraska to lose...because nothing in college football bugs me as much as Nebraska football fans..not all of them, but certainly most of them. Being a fan of Nebraska football is like being a fan of Speed Racer or Hawaiian vacations. They pick the car when they play Monopoly..when they want Italian food, they go to Fazoli's..they play Billy Joel on the jukebox and get really jacked up for a night out at Coconut Joe's. These people really go out on a limb, here. They're fans of the Cornhuskers in the fall. Come spring, they'll cheer for the Yankees. They loved the Chicago Bulls..right up until Jordan retired (the second time). They loved the Packers in the 60's, the Steelers in the 70's and the Niners in the 80's. Since then, though, they've really lost interest in the NFL--that whole revenue sharing, salary cap thing..way too much parity..I mean, how can you enjoy a game when you're not sure who's gonna win? Memorial Stadium in Lincoln holds about 74-thousand people. 74-thousand people? I didn't even realize there were that many people in the entire state! Where are these 74-thousand people during basketball season? Wait a minute..I think I just answered my own question...they're probably cheering for the Jayhawks, Tigers and Cyclones. That's another reason to cheer for Iowa State on Saturday--should the Cyclones win, they might just win over 74-thousand new fans. I'm Andy Fales and that's what's bugging me. ----- I hope you all enjoyed yesterday's games. My true sincere apologies to Nebraska fans; losing is a whole new concept for you. Try to be real fans and just wait it out. It's possible. I'm 6 days from being 20 and have been a fan of the Bears and Cubs all my life. I didn't exactly understand what football was in 1985 (age 3) when the Bears Super-Bowl-shuffled their way to an NFL Chamionship; as you know, that's about all the good that has happened for the Bears and Cubs in my lifetime. If any of you need an extra push to jump off the Big Red bandwagon, consider this: the letters that comprise the word "Cornhusker" can be rearranged to form the word "Hornsucker." Let's hope this doesn't come up on November 2nd when Nebraska tries their best against the 2nd-ranked Texas Longhorns. |
